You never get bored in Mal Pais.
There is always plenty to do once you tire of lounging lazily, and
something for everyone within an easy distance.
Surfing and Swimming
Our very secluded beach lies right on our doorstep - just 75 meters
away - for the adventurous surfer, eager swimmer, relaxed sunbather
or keen angler. And if it is snorkelling you are after, the perfect
spot is "The Swedish Beach", tucked away behind Sunset
Reef Hotel, a brisk 15-minute beach walk.
Mal
Pais, and adjacent Santa Teresa, is famous for long stretches of
white sandy beaches, perfect for swimming, surfing and boogy boarding.
Playa Carmen and Playa Hermosa are world-renowned surfing beaches
for everyday use, while Punta Barrigona is awesome when there's
a swell (click
here for a map). All are just a short drive away, and relatively
uncrowded.
Sport Fishing
The Fishermen's village adjacent to Sunset Reef Hotel is THE
place to go for fishing excursions and island tours. Simple "Pangas'
" can take up to 5 people out for 3 hours or more, either trawling
or "bottom" fishing. Yellow Fin Tuna, Red Snapper, Barracuda,
Bonito to name just some of the fish you'd expect to catch. Such
fun! Our personal recommendation would be to arrange an excursion
with Emiliano whom we've used for many years. He is a skilled and
very knowledgeable fisherman who speaks English and Spanish. We
would be happy to arrange your trip.
There is also a new operation now in Mal Pais. It is the Paradise
Reach Boat Charter Company. They operate the latest inflatable rib
sport fishing boat with a 150hp outboard motor, equipped with all
the latest satellite navigation aids, fishing equipment. Available
for charter for just about anything you wish to do including getting
to remote surf breaks, trips to the islands (prepared lunch by a
trained chef can be arranged), water skiing, and more.
Scuba Diving and Snorkelling
There are numerous interesting diving spots off Mal Pais Bay, including
a deep wreck dive at about 100ft. Among the reef fish there are
various types of moray eels, cleaner wrasses, surgeon and angelfish,
next to colourful puffer and parrotfish.
